Theresa Norton Masek reports in TravelPulse.com, "Carnival Cruise Lines is undertaking its most ambitious refit ever with a $155 million renovation of the 101,353-ton, 2,642-passenger Carnival Destiny. The ship will be renamed Carnival Sunshine following the 49-day dry-dock project, which will take place from February to April 2013. The massive project will add the new features of the Carnival 2.0 upgrade program and also include a reconfigured layout, the addition of a partial deck, expansion of two forward decks and the addition of 182 cabins. The refit work will be completed by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri. Some of the ship’s new features will include two free poolside eateries — Guy’s Burger Joint and BlueIguana Cantina — and the complimentary Cucina del Capitano Italian eatery. Also to be added are two restaurants with cover charges — Fahrenheit 555, a classic American steakhouse, and a new full-service Asian restaurant (no charge for lunch with a nominal fee for dinner). A new casual dining option called “The Comfort Kitchen,” located in the Lido Marketplace, will offer American-style comfort food. The ship also will get the RedFrog Pub, RedFrog Rum Bar, BlueIguana Tequila Bar, EA Sports Bar, and the vintage Alchemy Bar for sophisticated cocktails.
New watering holes include the Library Bar in the library; Havana Bar, a tropical-inspired nightspot located aft within Lido Marketplace; the new Sunshine Bar, in the lobby level of the atrium; and a new cigar bar. The ship will also get Piano Bar 88, a new twist on Carnival’s popular piano bar, as well as the Punchliner Comedy Club Presented by George Lopez. The ship will get Serenity, an adults-only retreat; SportSquare, the open-air recreation complex with a ropes course; and WaterWorks, an aqua park with a water slide. All staterooms will be fully revamped and feature a new tropical decor with bright colors and soothing pastels. The new staterooms will range the categories and will include 96 new spa staterooms."
WOW! The Carnival Destiny holds a special place in my heart because that is the first cruise I took with my boyfriend, now husband, Doug. We had such a great time. I remember us laughing just about every moment of the day and night. Maybe it was because we were just falling in love or maybe it was the sea air cleaning out all the cobwebs. I don't know. All I know is that someday we will take another cruise on this new and improved ship to reflect our new and improved relationship.
